Treating hypertension in patients with diabetes mellitus

Patients with diabetes mellitus are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease, and the risks are increased further in those who are also hypertensive.1 In patients in whom the two disorders coexist emphasis is placed on ensuring that blood pressure is brought down to normal (diastolic pressure below 90mm Hg).2 However, the choice of antihypertensive drugs is not straightforward - for example, some interfere with blood sugar control and others may reduce the risk of complications of diabetes. This article discusses the choices.
