New growth charts for children
New charts are available for monitoring children's growth.1* They are known as the 1990 Nine Centile United Kingdom Charts2 and replace the Tanner-Whitehouse Charts, which were first published in 1966.3,4 The older charts are now obsolete. The data upon which they are based are no longer valid as children's growth patterns have changed; babies nowadays gain weight faster during early life and may then experience some deceleration of growth after this initial spurt and, in general, children are taller.2
