Topical steroids for atopic dermatitis in primary care

Relevant BNF section: 13.4

Atopic dermatitis is very common. In most instances, the condition is relatively mild and can be managed in primary care.1 Topical corticosteroids are the standard therapy for controlling acute 'flares' of dermatitis.2,3 However, poor communication between doctors and patients often results in suboptimal use of such therapy.4 Here, we review the efficacy and safety of topical corticosteroids for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. We discuss their optimal use in primary care, and the advice and information that patients or parents of children need when using such treatment.*
