Topical steroids for atopic dermatitis in primary care

Atopic dermatitis is very common. In most instances, the conditionis relatively mild and can be managed in primary care.¹ Topicalcorticosteroids are the standard therapy for controlling acute'flares' of dermatitis.^2,3 However, poor communication betweendoctors and patients often results in suboptimal use of suchtherapy.⁴ Here, we review the efficacy and safety of topicalcorticosteroids for the treatment of atopic dermatitis. We discusstheir optimal use in primary care, and the advice and informationthat patients or parents of children need when using such treatment.*
