Mesterolone: a new androgen

Abstract

Mesterolone (Pro-Viron) is an orally active androgen used in some countries since 1966 and recently introduced into Britain. It is being promoted for the treatment of male hypogonadism with the claim that, unlike other androgens that are effective orally, it does not cause hepatic cholestasis nor does it inhibit pituitary gonadotrophin secretion.
