Timing antimalarial prophylaxis: when to start and how long to go on

Abstract

Unprepared travellers still die from falciparum malaria caught during holidays in endemic areas. In some cases the area was visited for only a short period during a tour of other countries. We discussed some aspects of malaria chemoprophylaxis three years ago,1 but the timing of prophylaxis is most important if the traveller is to get adequate protection.
