Helping excessively shy patients to develop social skills

Abstract

Many shy, gauche individuals without major psychiatric illness shun human contact because of their social anxieties and inability to form relationships. Many are upset by their social isolation and would welcome help in overcoming their handicaps. Some cannot work because they cannot cope with interviews, and fear criticism at work or even merely chatting with their workmates.
