Glaucoma: when to operate

Abstract

Glaucoma is a common cause of blindness in this country and is associated with raised intra-ocular pressure. Pressure can be reduced by drugs which increase the drainage of aqueous or reduce its rate of production,1–3 or by surgical drainage. When glaucoma is associated with other disease (such as iritis or trauma) each case requires an individual approach, but the principles of managing patients with closed-angle glaucoma or chronic simple glaucoma are now becoming clearer.
