Corticosteroids can prevent neonatal respiratory distress syndrome

Abstract

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is one of the commonest causes of death in the preterm infant. In 1976 we noted that corticosteroids given to the mother before premature delivery might reduce the incidence of RDS,1 and this possibility has now been investigated in a number of controlled trials.
