Drug trials in general practice

Abstract

Many drug trials in general practice are sponsored by pharmaceutical firms. Some ‘trials’ have been covert marketing exercises1–3 whilst many have been poorly designed. The standing of general practice may be prejudiced by participation in research of dubious quality.4 The place of industry-sponsored trials in general practice needs to be considered; many questions apply equally to trials performed in hospital.
