Abstract

Many drug trials in general practice are sponsored by pharmaceutical firms. Some ‘trials’ have been covert marketing exercises^1–3 whilst many have been poorly designed. The standing of general practice may be prejudiced by participation in research of dubious quality.⁴ The place of industry-sponsored trials in general practice needs to be considered; many questions apply equally to trials performed in hospital.
