Management of hirsutism

Abstract

Hirsutism is increased hair growth in women in a male pattern. Virilism has the added features of more severe androgen exposure and is usually accompanied by amenorrhoea. Acne can occur in either. Hypertrichosis is increased hair growth all over the body, usually of the vellus (lanugo) type. Most drugs used to treat hirsutism are unlicensed for this indication. Is it justified to use them for this purpose?
