How should fungal nail infection be treated?

  • Relevant BNF section: 5.2 13.10.2

Abstract

Many people consulting dermatologists for nail problems have a fungal nail infection (onychomycosis). This may be asymptomatic and not merit prolonged treatment, particularly since relapse after such intervention is common.13 On the other hand, fungal nail infection is sometimes a treatable risk factor for more serious bacterial infections including cellulitis.4 Here we discuss the management of adults with fungal nail infection.
