Corticosteroids in asthma

Abstract

A corticosteroid is required either when other drugs fail to relieve a serious attack of asthma, or when asthma persistently interferes with the enjoyment of life. Its successful use depends on striking the best balance between adequate clinical response and unwanted effects. Since the mode of action of corticosteroids in asthma is unknown, treatment regimens are empirical.
