A randomised controlled trial has assessed the efficacy and safety of faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for the treatment of ulcerative colitis.1 While the cause of ulcerative colitis is not fully understood, an inflammatory response to colonic bacteria is thought to play a role. In theory, therefore, microbial manipulation via FMT may provide a possible treatment option.
