AB  - Miconazole is a synthetic phenethyl imidazole derivative similar to clotrimazole (Canesten - Bayer).1 It has a broad spectrum of antifungal activity, and applications are effective against superficial fungal and yeast infections of the skin and mucosae. Two manufacturers make preparations for this purpose. Daktarin (Janssen) and Dermonistat (Ortho) are for use on the skin; Gyno-Daktarin and Monistat are preparations for treating candidal vaginitis and vulvovaginitis. All these creams contain 2% miconazole nitrate. Preparations for systemic use are being investigated but are not yet generally available.
