Both drugs may lower the blood pressure when it is raised. In a double-blind trial1 a combination of the two (given in separate tablets) was found to be better than either drug alone combined with a placebo. The dose of hydrochlorothiazide was 100 mg daily and the dose of methyldopa was increased from 1 to 2 G daily after the first week.
