AB In severe respiratory failure due to acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis the patient is endangered mainly by hypoxia.1 Oxygen relieves the hypoxia but removes the hypoxic stimulus to breathing, which becomes depressed. Carbon dioxide accumulates and he is then endangered by carbon dioxide narcosis2 which is a clinical problem only after oxygen therapy.1
