Eutonyl and MAO inhibitors

Abstract

Pargyline (Eutonyl - Abbott), a benzyl amine with an acetylenic group attached, is a new monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor with the central stimulant and the hypotensive effects of other MAO inhibitors. These effects do not however correlate well with the degree of MAO inhibition produced by the drugs and their mechanism of action is not clear. Pargyline is promoted only for the treatment of hypertension, and not for depression.
