Drugs which lower the plasma lipids

Abstract

Lowering of the plasma cholesterol and other plasma lipids by drugs is of definite value in certain types of xanthomatosis, but there is no reliable evidence that it can slow the progress of atherosclerosis or improve the prognosis of the atherosclerotic patient. Since many clinicians and investigators nevertheless use such drugs, their effectiveness and safety must be considered. Dietary means of lowering plasma lipids will be discussed in a future issue.
