Abstract

The organic nitrates are prescribed for patients suffering from angina (ischaemic heart pain) in the hope that they will(1) relieve the angina of rest and of emotional stress, (2) relieve or (3) prevent angina of effort and (4) increase coronary artery blood flow. Though these drugs benefit most patients with angina, there is uncertainty about the way they work and controversy on how they should be used.
