Flavoxate (urispas)

Abstract

Flavoxate is a new synthetic antispasmodic promoted as ‘selective for the lower urinary tract’. The makers claim that while flavoxate is a powerful antispasmodic it is relatively free from the unwanted anticholinergic effects usually associated with drugs of this class, and they suggest its use for the symptomatic relief of dysuria, urgency, nocturia, frequency, vesical pain and incontinence. There is, however, no general agreement about the place of any spasmolytic drug in the treatment of urinary tract disease, except perhaps renal colic and carcinoma of the bladder with vesical spasm.
