Local application of heat
Abstract
The soothing effect of heat on the body is well known and many methods of warming have been devised, ranging from local fomentations of hot dung to the application of ultrasonic waves. Despite the continuing popularity of heat treatment, few objective assessments of its value have been undertaken. Unless fundamental therapeutic benefits or prolonged analgesia and muscle relaxation can be demonstrated, the use of elaborate methods of applying heat is unjustified.
