Halothane and the liver

Abstract

It now seems likely that halothane can damage the liver in some patients, but how it does so remains undetermined. It has in particular been suggested that multiple exposure to halothane is hazardous and may lead to liver damage, often manifest as jaundice. The possible mechanisms of ‘halothane hepatitis’ have been debated at length but no clear consensus has yet emerged.1–3
