Co-trimoxazole - too toxic for minor infections ?

Abstract

Co-trimoxazole (Septrin; Bactrim), the combination of trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole, has proved effective in the treatment of salmonella infections, Gram-negative infections and brucellosis, and also in the management of exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, otitis media and urinary tract infections. In the selection of any drug, however, efficacy must be balanced against toxicity. This article discusses the balance.
