Abstract

Since we last discussed vitamin D therapy¹ the synthetic vitamin D analogue 1α-hydroxyvitamin D₃ has become available as alfacalcidol (One-Alpha - Leo). It is recommended for treatment of hypoparathyroidism, renal bone disease, vitamin D-dependent rickets, vitamin D-resistant hypophosphataemic rickets and osteomalacia. Peri-operative treatment is also recommended to reduce the risks of hypocalcaemia after parathyroidectomy.
