Abstract

Mezlocillin (Baypen - Bayer) is a new, semisynthetic penicillin for parenteral use in hospitals. It embraces the spectrum of both ampicillin and carbenicillin. The manufacturer suggests its use for infections of the chest, abdomen, urinary tract, soft tissue, bone and meninges caused by susceptible organisms. We assess it by the criteria in our recent article on what to look for in a new antibiotic.¹
