Azlocillin (Securopen - Bayer) is a new parenteral acylureido penicillin similar in structure and spectrum to mezlocillin (Baypen).1 Similar drugs such as piperacillin (Pipril) are likely to be marketed soon. The manufacturer intends azlocillin for infections caused by Pseudomonas, but still markets mezlocillin as a broad-spectrum antibiotic, a promotion which we have already criticised.
