Doxycycline - dispersible tablets

Abstract

Doxycycline capsules (Vibramycin) were one of several preparations which we mentioned in our article on drugs that can damage the oesophagus.1 These capsules are apt to stick to the oesophageal mucosa where they dissolve and cause damage as a result of their high acidity. A dispersible tablet formulation, which should avoid this problem, has now been introduced (Vibramycin D - Pfizer). Despite its extra cost the tablet form should therefore replace the capsules.
