Abstract

Doxycycline capsules (Vibramycin) were one of several preparations which we mentioned in our article on drugs that can damage the oesophagus.¹ These capsules are apt to stick to the oesophageal mucosa where they dissolve and cause damage as a result of their high acidity. A dispersible tablet formulation, which should avoid this problem, has now been introduced (Vibramycin D - Pfizer). Despite its extra cost the tablet form should therefore replace the capsules.
