Abstract

We reviewed electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in 1977¹ at a time when public controversy over its value was at its peak in the United States and in this country. Since then several major well controlled studies have been published which help clarify the position and are discussed below. Several reviews have also appeared.^2–5
