Abstract

When we discussed mucolytics¹ we did not include two older drugs, guaiphenesin and iodide. Since the introduction of the DHSS limited list guaiphenesin is no longer available on NHS prescription and medicines containing it can be bought only over the counter or on private prescription. Iodide, however, seems to have been overlooked by the Minister’s advisers and can be prescribed in the NHS. Are these drugs of value in respiratory disease?
