The influence of relapse rate on the choice of duodenal ulcer therapy

Abstract

Histamine-2-receptor blockers (H2 blockers) heal nearly all duodenal ulcers effectively and relieve symptoms rapidly. But they do not alter the natural history of the disease so that the ulcer often relapses when treatment is stopped after healing. Maintenance therapy reduces this relapse rate by over half, but at considerable expense.
