▾Topical minoxidil does little for baldness

Abstract

Most patients taking oral minoxidil for hypertension develop hypertrichosis and in a few, male-pattern baldness has improved.1 Topical formulations attempt to stimulate hair growth without the systemic effects; a 2% minoxidil solution (Regaine, Upjohn) has been marketed in the UK since May 1988 for male-pattern or ‘common’ baldness. It is not licensed for use by women or in other forms of baldness and is only available on private prescription.
