An oestrogen patch for hormone replacement therapy

Abstract

Oestrogen for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is now well established for treating perimenopausal symptoms and preventing osteoporosis.1 It also protects against ischaemic heart disease and stroke.2,3 A transdermal delivery method for oestradiol (Estraderm TTS – transdermal therapeutic system) as a ‘patch’ now exists. What advantage does the patch offer over oral or implanted oestrogen?
