Sodium valproate and spina bifida

Abstract

Congenital abnormalities occur in 7% of babies born to mothers with epilepsy who are taking anticonvulsants, 2–3 times more than in babies born to healthy mothers. Cleft lip and palate are particularly frequent, but the range of abnormalities is wide. Genetic and other factors may contribute, but it seems likely that drug therapy is largely responsible for the excess of abnormalities.
