Abstract

Misoprostol (Cytotec - Searle) is the first prostaglandin analogue licenced for oral use in Britain. It is intended for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, including those induced by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is the first drug to be licensed for ‘prophylaxis of NSAID-induced ulcers’. How effective is it and when should it be used?
