Abstract

Many people drink alcohol in amounts that threaten their health, their work, their relationships or their personality. Patients with such problems can be found in every hospital department. They may not admit their alcohol problem and their symptoms of alcohol withdrawal may be overlooked during an intercurrent illness. Some may not develop any symptoms on withdrawal, and they may leave with their problem unrecognised.
