Abstract

Doctors are under increasing pressure to reduce prescribing costs. In most hospitals, drug budgets are under the scrutiny of local Drugs and Therapeutics Committees buttressed by local audit arrangements. In the community, Family Health Service Authorities (FHSAs) are now negotiating indicative prescribing amounts with GPs and incentive schemes with their Local Medical Committees.¹
