▾ Fluoxetine, suicide and aggression

Abstract

Fluoxetine (Prozac – Lilly) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, an effective but expensive alternative to tricyclic antidepressants.1 Reports from the USA have linked its use to suicidal thoughts and violent behaviour – some patients complaining that they become obsessed with urges to harm themselves or others. Law suits are pending in the USA; unfavourable reports in the media have been based largely on anecdote.2 The data sheet for the drug now notes suicidal ideation and violent behaviour. Is there a causal relationship?
