A hospital-based benzodiazepine policy
Abstract
Over 500 000 patients in Britain take a prescribed benzodiazepine (BZ) long term, and many will suffer withdrawal effects if their drugs are stopped.1 Prescribing in hospitals contributes to the initiation of BZ use,2 and some prescriptions are clearly unnecessary.3 A BZ prescribing policy offering guidance for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and patients should help curb the inappropriate use and potential abuse of BZs.
