▾ Aazelaic acid – a new topical treatment for acne

Abstract

Azelaic acid cream (Skinoren – Schering Health Care), an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, is licensed for the topical treatment of patients with acne vulgaris. It is a novel compound not related to other anti-acne drugs. The manufacturer claims that azelaic acid has a “unique triple action”, combining antibacterial, anticomedonal and anti-inflammatory activities. We examine this claim and discuss its place in the treatment of acne.
