Hormonal emergency contraception

Abstract

Each year 170000 abortions are carried out in England and Wales.1 Many of these could be avoided with hormonal emergency (postcoital) contraception, but women need to know that such an intervention is available.2 In the UK hormonal emergency contraception is provided by a 4-tablet course of a relatively high-dose combination preparation of norgestrel plus ethinyloestradiol.3
