Abstract

Vaccination against pneumococcal infection was introduced in the UK in 1979. Currently, the vaccine is recommended by the Department of Health for patients at high risk of developing pneumococcal infection.1 Here we discuss the epidemiology of pneumococcal infection and consider the effectiveness of the vaccines available and their use in clinical practice.
