Levonorgestrel intra-uterine system for menorrhagia
  • Relevant BNF section: 7.3.2.3

Abstract

In 1996, we concluded that the levonorgestrel intra-uterine system (levonorgestrel IUS; Mirena - Schering Health Care) was an effective contraceptive.1 The product is now also licensed as a treatment for "idiopathic menorrhagia", with the claim that it "may be particularly useful in women with idiopathic menorrhagia requiring (reversible) contraception".2 We assess the efficacy and safety of levonorgestrel IUS in the management of heavy menstrual bleeding.
