Abstract

Chloramphenicol has been the standard drug in typhoid fever for almost twenty years. It does however carry a small but gave risk of producing marrow aplasia,^{1 2} and a safe and equally effective alternative would therefore be preferable. Ampicillin in particular must be considered.
