The NHS is under ever-increasing financial pressure and a significant proportion of the budget is spent on pharmacotherapy. Pharmacological interventions are generally easy to prescribe, dispense and supply. However, does such ease of access encourage healthcare professionals to consider drug therapy ahead of other effective interventions? As long as a drug is on a local formulary there may be little scrutiny of how it is prescribed in relation to other treatment options.
