Nalmefene, an opioid modulator, has been available in the UK since 2013 for the reduction of alcohol consumption in adults with alcohol dependence who have a high drinking risk level, without physical withdrawal symptoms and who do not require immediate detoxification.1 It is licensed for use on an as-needed basis with patients advised to take one tablet on days on which they perceive a risk of drinking.
