Medium-chain triglycerides

Abstract

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) (Alembicol D - Lovelock; MCT oil - Trufood), contain fatty acids of 8 and 10 carbon atoms. They are offered as a calorie supplement for patients unable to digest or absorb longer fat molecules. They are prepared by fractionating the C8–C12 acids present in coconut oil and re-esterifying them with glycerol to produce triglyceride.
