New and old potassium preparations
Abstract
Potassium depletion resulting from prolonged diuretic therapy1 is apt to develop insidiously and may be dangerous. It is still not generally appreciated that renal tubular damage and myocardial degeneration may precede symptoms of depletion,2 and that cardiac arrhythmias more commonly complicate digitalis treatment in the presence of hypokalaemia.
