Lactulose in liver failure

Abstract

Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide, 1–4-β-galactosido-fructose. Duphalac Syrup (Duphar) contains lactose 50% w/w, and small amounts of lactose and galactose. It is claimed that it is a safe treatment of chronic constipation and that it can reverse the encephalopathy of liver disease.
