Key learning points

  • A comparison of drugs to treat trigeminal neuralgia found carbamazepine, lidocaine and botulinum toxin type A to be more effective than other treatments and placebo.

  • Lidocaine and botulinum toxin type A appeared to give a better response rate than carbamazepine but the reviewers did not take into account the safety profile of the drugs.

  • The analysis was based on a small number of studies and the estimates had large credible intervals, which suggests that the results should be interpreted with caution.
