Drugs in the management of puerperal breast engorgement

Abstract

Many oestrogens, alone or with an androgen, are promoted for suppression of lactation and for the relief of painful engorgement of the breasts in the early puerperium. These include non-steroid oestrogens such as stilboestrol, methallenoestril (Vallestril - Searle) and chlorotrianisene (TACE - Merrell) for oral use; and long-acting steroids such as oestradiol valerate, alone or with testosterone oenanthate for intramuscular injection.
